THE POOLE YARD
Two brothers, one Dorset harbour, and a yard that still keeps design, engineering and finishing in Poole.
Sunseeker began in Poole, Dorset, in 1969, when brothers Robert and John Braithwaite founded Poole Power Boats. In 1985 the company took the name Sunseeker International. Design, engineering and finishing are done in-house at its Design & Technology Centre in Poole, down to the furniture, electrical systems and helm stations.
In September 2019 the yard set up a superyacht division to build metal yachts from 30.7 to 49 metres, partnering with Pendennis and Icon Yachts. The 40-metre 133 Yacht was to be built at Pendennis and the 49-metre 161 flagship at Icon, as part of a plan to grow the range to 22 models by 2022.
Recent years have brought change. In October 2024 Orienta Capital Partners and Lionheart Capital bought Sunseeker from the Chinese group Wanda; the year before, it had ranked ninth in BOAT's Global Order Book. In January 2025 the yard put 100 of its 2,150 employees on temporary layoff because of supply-chain disruption, and said all would return by 27 January. The yard now deals with that work itself.
Pura Vida is a 30.48-metre Sunseeker 100 Yacht from 2024, 55 years after Poole Power Boats began.
